I use 4. With the shift/alt shortcuts I find using 4 is faster than trying to use more, but I could understand why one would like to keep a 5th one in the center.
I see people using 7 or 8 probes at once though and I just wonder, is there some secret technique that makes scanning actually faster with more probes?
On paper 8 would scan twice as fast as 4 when you have more than 1 signature, but the alt key shortcut makes it faster to just use 4 on both sigs. |

You sure? I'll test later and see if that's true. |

Get your Astro skills up to at least L4 on all, use Sisters gear plus Grav Cap, and throw in a bonused ship for good measure, and you don't need to embarass yourselves posting non-sense on the Forums anymore.
Unless you're into that... Even dev posts explaining why they made a change you're claiming hasn't happened?
Win. Actually the answer I was looking for.
Iv'e been reading patch notes for the last 5 expansions and it got ninja patched lol. |

There is a way to lock all signatures down to 100% (even the faintest) with one click at 64AU.
Its simple.. MOAR probes.
This is the secret CCP didnt want you to know.. but you heard it hear first.
Drop 8 probes (or as many as you have skill to drop).
Leave system.
Return to your location, drop 8 more.
Leave system.
Rinse and repeat 100 times until you have 800 probes.
Hit scan, bingo.
Funny thing though, by the time you are dropping your 400'th probe I am already scanning the next system |

Actually, if you use the right keyboard shortcuts (ALT and SHIFT), positioning 4 is no faster than using 7 or 8. It's identical, once you get past the step of initially deploying the probes.
I thought initially 4 were the max number that affected scan results (as it was 2 years ago). I was also referencing using 8 probes by doing 4/4 on two separate sigs versus using 4 with alt/shift one after the other.
But you're right, there would be no difference save the clutter of probes at this point. |

Your thoughts?
I recently started using 6 (was using 4) in the same area. Not sure if it actually speeds up scanning speed since it seems I will still get the 100% hit at the same scan range:
The previous scan can be 54% or 65%; there is no difference if I still hit 100% with a 2 AU range in both cases (4 vs 6 probes).
The difference I do notice is that using 6 probes covers more area, so scanning multiple sigs close to each other can get faster. It does however come at the cost of more clutter, which slows down my scanning by wasting time readjusting the screen in a 3D environment. 4 probes in a plane is much easier to manage (and faster for my brain to process), but it could just be me not being used to it yet. |
